In the dying moments, pure elation erupted for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola in a state of despair and provided the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Pedigree

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with 40 trophies for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the visitors' dugout, was a former coach at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his senior managerial bow after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Another key part of his blueprint was to maximise disruption. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea delayed at a dead ball, a sure sign the hosts' rhythm was being broken up and the Guardiola blueprint was being frustrated.
